Common Areas Around Your Home That Need To Be Checked For Leaks

Water leakage is one of the common plumbing problems for many homeowners. Apart from water damage that may result from these leaks, the economic impact to the homeowner is immense. Research has also shown that typical homes in Australia lose thousands of dollars every year in the form of water wasted through leaks.  What’s interesting is that most of the leaks do not require a professional plumber to fix.

Checking Leaks in Your Home

But how do you identify water leaks in homes? Here are the common areas around your home that need to be checked for leaks:

  • Taps

These are the main areas where most of the water in our homes is lost. You need to check all taps in the bathrooms, laundry, kitchen and the outside. It’s very easy to tell whether the tap is leaking or not. If you have to tighten the handle to stop the drips, then there is a problem with the tap’s washers. If you have mixer taps, you may need to replace the cartridge to stop leakage in the middle or through the spout.

  • Underneath Sinks

This is another area in your home that you need to check for leaks. The cause of the leaks in this part of the sink is mostly a faulty or loose trap. If there is any moisture while the water is running through the sink tap, you need to tighten it or replace it with a new one.  It’s important to call a professional plumber in Brisbane if replacement is necessary.

  • Toilet Waste

The toilet is one of the areas in our homes where most of the water is lost. You need to check the waste for the leak. If you flush the toilet and there is water coming through the pipes or out of the pan collar, then there is a problem. You need to have the pan collar replaced to fix the leak.

  • Toilet Cistern

Water draining from the cistern into the bowl is one of the major ways through which we waste a lot of water. You need to check the condition of the cistern regularly to ensure that there is no water leaking into the bowl. In the ideal condition, the cistern should only refill after flushing. You can carry out a colour test to check for the cistern leak.

  • Shower tray

Shower tray leaks are some of the most difficult to notice but are also a major source of water leaks. There are various ways you can go about to check for these leaks. If you live in a storied building, you can check the ceiling underneath the shower waste for dampness. If your house is on ground level, check the immediate walls for dampness.

  • Water Pipes

This is another hard leak to identify since the pipes are mostly concealed in the walls. These leaks are disastrous when they happen and should be attended to immediately when noticed. The only way to identify this leak is through a dampening of the wall where the pipes are passing. They are very difficult to repair since you’ll be required to dig into the wall. Always have your plumbing system inspected to avoid issues like this.
